Even the origin of the words we use illustrate this cosmic story. The word cosmos is commonly defined as “the universe” or “outer space”; but etymologically, the word is a Latinized form of the Greek word kosmos, meaning “good order or orderly arrangement.” It suggests that while the universe itself is made of infinite stars, planets, and galaxies stretching out forever into space, it is really a pattern within a pattern, a harmonic and holy ordering of itself. The word cosmetics carries the same implications, and while we may understand it to mean lipstick, blush, and mascara, it comes from the same root as cosmos and more rightly refers to the act of adorning and arranging the face in harmony with itself. Beauty making is a way to make many things whole.
